Little Softies Goes Green March 31, 2009

scotties-envirocare-jpeg-4We turn the calendar to April tomorrow and that means Earth Day is coming up (April 22). I suspect Earth Day 2009 will see more green products hit the market than ever before. Everyone seems to be getting the message that we should choose green whenever we can.

Next time facial tissues are on your shopping list, look for Scotties EnviroCare. It’s Canada’s first 100 per cent recycled premium tissue. I held up a single tissue and compared it with another premium brand. The colour and texture were nearly identical. Plus the new Scotties come in four pretty boxes. Apparently 75 per cent of shoppers are influenced by package design when buying facial tissues (oh, that blue one will look nice in the bathroom).

$1.25 to $1.69 per box

More Buriti Please March 30, 2009

buritibodyscrubThe Brazilians call it the Miracle Palm and I can see why. The new body scrub from Fruits & Passion features a healthy helping of buriti oil and it performed miracles on my post-Mexico, back in the Canadian deep-freeze skin. There’s little brown bits in the paste that take care of the exfoliation but I am most impressed with what’s left behind. There’s a slightly oily film but it’s not a bad thing. It quickly soaks in, smells wonderful and makes your skin look like it belongs to one of those models for a Bali tourism ad. The scrub is free of parabens, silicones, mineral oils and dyes, so scrub away! Here are a few facts about buriti oil:

  • The fruit of the South American buriti tree contains precious oil. The fruit is picked up from the ground after falling from the tree and the oil is extracted without any added chemical solvents.
  • Naturally orange in color, buriti oil is extremely rich in provitamin A (beta-carotene) and essential fatty acids which, in addition to being an antioxidant, helps tone and improve skin elasticity.

BONUS PRIZE PACK: PC Home and PC Green March 27, 2009

pc-green-dishwasher1

It’s getting easier to find green cleaning supplies but just a few years ago, that wasn’t the case. I grew up on a lake and now have a cottage near one so I’ve always done my best to rid my wash water of phosphates and keep other nasties out of the water system.

One place I could always find what I needed was Superstore and the aisle featuring the PC Green brand. Believe it or not, the brand has been around for 20 years and it’s still leading the way by bringing shoppers those greener alternatives that we are all seeking these days (we are, aren’t we?).

Along with the top drawer PC Green line, Superstore also has the PC Home line of very contemporary cleaning tools (they are hip!). Now you might argue that no one really cares what a scrub brush looks like as long as it gets the job done. Fair argument. But for me, stylish tools makes the work a little less painful, and PC Home is always big on style, easy on the pocketbook and hard working to boot! Plus my mom will be impressed that I actually own cleaning tools.

WIN DURING SPRING CLEANING WEEK: Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner

Filed under: Consumer Goods — shinypackages @ 2:35 pm
Tags: , , , , ,

You’re just back from the monster truck derby. Covered in mud. Stand by the washing machine, peel off those duds and drop them in. The machine will take care of the rest. Oh thank goodness we don’t have to head down to the river with a washboard in hand to take care of this mess.

Washing machines work all year round to keep your clothes looking their best. Now the washer needs to be cleaned. This may seem like an odd chore to add to your list but it’s especially important with the new high efficiency (HE) machines.

HE washers use less water and seal more tightly than older, less-efficient appliances. As a result, they are more prone to odour-causing residue, mold and mildew stains. Affresh Washer Cleaner to the rescue! Simply drop in a puck and run the machine through a regular cycle. Now your machine is ready for those snow white sheets.

This line of cleaners from Canadian Tire has everything going for it including being biodegradable and
non-toxic. It doesn’t have any artificial fragrances.

  1. It works like a charm. I started my spring cleaning on the weekend and couldn’t help but be impressed with the bathroom cleaner in particular. The scent is marvelously fresh with no chemical traces.
  2. The price is right. The dish washing liquid is $2.49 and the laundry detergent is $6.99. All the other products fall in this range.
  3. The packaging is beautiful. Okay, I know that doesn’t mean a whole bunch when it comes to getting your toilet sparkling clean but at least I can get inspired to clean when the bottle is pretty (and made from 100 per cent post-consumer waste).

SPRING CLEANING WEEK: Never Lose Suction March 23, 2009

dc25-animalI finally bit the bullet and ordered a Dyson. It will arrive in a couple of weeks but I’m convinced it will be like no other vacuum I have ever owned. I’ve watched the You Tube videos. The fact that it will never lose suction is a big plus. I’ve been a sucker over the last 10 years, buying upright vacuums for $200 a piece that are now parked in the garage. I keep hoping someday they will miraculously start sucking again. This new DC25 Animal has the ball technology, you know, the neat feature where you can scoot around table legs without a collision and the subsequent swearing. The price of this model adds up to at least three of those suckless models in the garage. It’s time to buy big and be done with it. $699 at Sears, The Bay and Future Shop.

(Sorry, no prize pack on this baby. A new prize gets posted tomorrow.)

Your New Spring Coat March 21, 2009

jfs-classic-trench-59One morning it’s winter and by afternoon, spring has arrived. That’s the way it is in Canada. And there’s me, without a new spring coat. Once again, I have to turn to Joe. This classic trench from Joe Fresh Style also comes in a perky coral colour. There’s also a shorter version, which I recently purchased, and stepping out of my safe black/navy zone, bought it in the raspberry shade. The styling does wonders for any figure and the sizing is bang on, maybe tipping slightly to the generous. Wear it with some funky rubber boots, tights and a jaunty short scarf. $59 for the trench, $39 for the shorter version at Superstore and Loblaws.
